About
I grew up in a rural town called Russellville, Kentucky. I’ve lived in the Washington, DC area for 20 years but still reflect back on the peacefulness of that place and the connection people have to the land.
I began making landscape paintings on site about 15 years ago. It was something that just happened, and felt pretty good to be out of the studio making work. Over the years, I’ve stuck to landscape painting and the work has become a way for me to explore my own connection to place. I often say the work is a by-product of experience—that being there, and taking the time to paint it, is what counts—but I hope the work itself, reveals an intimacy with the land, and in turn brings enjoyment or a reminder of quiet moments.
Frederick Markham received his Bachelor of Arts from Transylvania University (Lexington, KY) in 1998. Shortly after receiving his MFA, he began to make vigorously painted plein-air paintings in the DC and Northern Virginia Area which he has exhibited regionally and nationally. In addition, he has been a local educator at a number of schools and colleges including, The George Washington University, The Art League School (Alexandria, VA), Montgomery College, and Northern Virginia Community College. Since 2007 he has been a professor of painting and drawing at the Woodbridge campus of Northern Virginia Community College.
